New year, new you? 2020 is coming on quickly (unless you’re reading this well after the new year), and we all know it’s that time of the year – New Year’s resolutions! The time when gym memberships increase, healthier lifestyles are envisioned and dreams are to materialize… or so we think. According to U.S News and World Report, 80% of resolutions fail by February*. EIGHTY PERCENT! Don’t get us wrong, it is a wonderful thing to visualize a healthier lease on life but we can’t do anything in and of ourselves. Don’t look so discouraged. Repeat after us – “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”** That’s a promise from our very own Heavenly Father! He loves us SO much, he has left us with a fool-proof plan that will trump all of our failed attempts. It’s found right there in His Word… 3 John 2, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in heath, even as thy soul prospereth.”
God’s Plan is to have us, with His help and guidance, in the best health so we can live for him and be a witness to others! Isn’t that great news? Let’s clarify even further. The health God is speaking of isn’t limited to physical. It includes spiritual, mental and even social. They are all interrelated and interdependent. If one of these aspects of our lives are failing, chances are, the others will begin to crumble and no one wants to live like that.
Another thing that makes God’s Plan that much better is that it’s for EVERYONE. Yes, that includes you and you and definitely you too! He wants us all to eat, drink and live healthily, all to His glory an according to His plan. The Bible has a wealth of information when it comes to diet and drink. An example would be eating at proper times of the day – “… feast (eat) at the proper time – for strength and not for drunkenness.”***
Our bodies need to be regulated to do what it needs to do on a timely basis. Eating a midnight snack when we should be sleeping throws off our circadian rhythm, our appetite and even our mood. We’re even given a strong suggestion in Proverbs to, “put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.” That may sound ridiculous but that’s how cut-throat (no pun intended) we need to be about any intemperate habits we may have, including our diet. The saying is really true, you are what you eat so make sure you aren’t eating garbage.
Now God’s Plan isn’t subject to just diet. He even touches on thing of the social and spiritual realm. “Loose the bonds of wickedness … undo the heavy burdens … share your bread with the hungry, and … bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked … cover him, and … your healing shall spring forth speedily” (Isaiah 58:6–8). Helping others with the right intentions, helps our mood, our witness and our social skills. We need to let God’s light shine through us so the more we help, the more He is seen. And yes, this can be said for our individual spiritual walk. Witnessing helps with solidifying His Word, the truth and His promises to ourselves and reminds us how much we are loved.
If we think of GOD’S PLAN as a simple acronym, it would help us summarize His intentions for us.
G – Godly Trust
O – Open Air
D – Daily Exercise
S – Sunlight
P – Proper Rest
L – Lots of Water
A – Always Temperate
N – Nutrition
Although these examples are just a glimpse of God’s Plan, we hope that it can kickstart you into a stronger relationship with the Lord. Let the new year be one of true growth in health and not just a fanciful vision. Lean on Him and not yourself. We can be healthier in ever aspect of our lives – it just starts with one prayer.
